Visitor Visa

A visitor visa also called a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is a travel document that allows international residents to come to Canada. Unless you are from a visa-exempt country, you will need to apply for a visitor visa before traveling to Canada, regardless of whether you are a visitor, a student, or coming to work temporarily in Canada.

There are two types of Canadian visitor visas: multi-entry and single entry. You don’t need to worry about which one you are applying for; all applications are automatically presumed to be multi-entry, and a single entry will only be issued in special cases.

Getting Your Visitor Visa

Anyone who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or from a visa-exempt country must apply for a visitor visa or electronic travel authorization before traveling.

A visitor visa application can be made online or in person at a local Visa Application Centre (VAC). Each family member traveling with you, including minor dependent children, must have a valid visitor visa.

To apply, you will need:

  • Valid travel documents or a passport
  • To be medically admissible
  • A clean criminal record
  • To satisfy immigration officers that you will leave Canada after your visit
  • To demonstrate ties to your home country in the form of employment, assets, or family

You may also be asked for:

  • Proof of fund
  • Letter of invitation (for visits)
  • Hotel booking for tourists

Can I stay in Canada with an Expired Visitor Visa?

If your visitor visa is about to expire, but you would like to stay in Canada for a little longer, you can apply for an extension, and we can help. If your visitor visa has already expired, but it’s been less than 90 days, we can help you apply for a restoration of status.

You can legally stay in Canada while waiting for the results of your application for an extension or restoration.
