The Canadian Federal Government offers investment immigration to Canada through two active programs: the Canada Start-Up Visa Program and the Federal Self-Employed Persons Program.
The Canada Start-Up Visa Program was designed to allow innovative entrepreneurs the opportunity to establish themselves in Canada while developing their new business. You bring to the table a unique business plan that will create Canadian jobs and compete on a global scale, and in return, you and your family can begin putting down roots in Canada.
Individuals interested in a Canada Start-Up Visa program must meet all four program eligibility requirements in addition to general admissibility criteria. Applicants must:
A Start-Up Visa requires applicants to secure funding or support from a list of potential designated organizations. Capital can be raised in the form of venture capital, an angel investor, or a business incubation program. The amount of funding required will depend on the investor group and no capital investment is required if you are accepted into a recognized business incubator program.
In addition to any capital investment received from a designated investor group, applicants must also present proof of sufficient funds to settle in Canada. This amount starts at just over $13,000 for a single person and gradually increases with each additional family member.
The Federal Self-Employed Persons Program provides individuals from select occupations in the arts and culture industry or high-level athletes the ability to immigrate to Canada provided they can demonstrate they have the skills and experience necessary to be gainfully self-employed. Unlike other investment immigration programs in Canada, no financial commitment is required for the Federal Self-Employed Program.
Candidates with the relevant experience will have their applications evaluated on a points-based grading system. The Federal Self-Employed Program is open to all provinces and territories apart from Quebec which operates its own program.
In addition to Federal programs, each Canadian province and territory operates its own Provincial Nomination Programs (PNPs). These programs are designed to meet specific regional labour market or economic needs – and many of these PNPs have designated streams for candidates with entrepreneurial or managerial experience.
There are several investment immigration-aligned PNPs in Canada and their eligibility requirements will vary by province and program. However, receiving a PNP ensures that an application for permanent residency will be successful at the Federal level.
