The Canada Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is an important economic immigration pathway for foreign nationals with professional work experience. The FSWP operates through the Express Entry; candidates must meet the minimum requirements for Express Entry and the eligibility criteria for the Federal Skilled Worker Program.
Selection for the Federal Skilled Worker Program operates on a points-based ranking structure – known as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) – which evaluates several factors that together help determine a candidate’s potential for economic success in Canada.
Admission through the FSWP is competitive, with only the highest-ranking applicants earning an Invitation to Apply for Canadian permanent residency. While the bulk of your points will be earned through a combination of work experience, language skills, and education, other point factors can help you increase your CRS score, making your profile more competitive.
Before entering the Canada Federal Skilled Worker Express Entry pool, candidates must verify their eligibility for the program. The FSWP has minimum requirements for education, work experience, and language skills. Provided these criteria are all met, a candidate’s application will be evaluated and assigned points based on:
The current passing score for this portion of the evaluation is 67 points out of a possible 100. Note that this score is different from the CRS score assigned to your profile once you enter the Express Entry pool.
There are three minimum requirements for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and all of them must be met to be eligible for the program.
The FSWP is intended for highly skilled and experienced workers, typically those with the type of employment that requires special training or post-secondary education. You can verify if your job meets the requirement by checking the National Occupation Classification (NOC) system. Applicants for the FSWP must have experience in one of the following occupations, earned within the previous ten years:
Candidates must have one-year continuous full-time experience in their field or equivalent part-time.
The Canada Federal Skilled Worker Program requires applicants to have a secondary or post-secondary degree. If your degree or certificate is from a Canadian institution, you can simply include the document with your application. Educational credentials are from a foreign institution will require an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).
Minimum language skills in either English or French are required for the FSWP, however, you can earn additional CRS points for having skills in both official languages. Candidates must take an approved language test in English or French and receive a minimum score of CLB 7 in all four language abilities:
In addition to the minimum core program requirements, candidate profiles, including their partner or spouse, will be evaluated and scored based on:
Additionally, families immigrating to Canada who are not currently legally allowed to work or who don’t have a valid job offer must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to settle. The amount required will depend on the number of family members in your household.

But Ranjeet was helpful as soon as I met her. She was very attentive and explained to me everything really well and was a big help in getting me my PR. Thank you so much, Ranjeet!
