Canada has long held a place as one of the most desirable destinations for international students. With some of the best post-secondary institutions in the world – five of the country’s universities are ranked among the top 100 in the world – Canada also offers affordable tuition, a high standard of living, and a diverse, welcoming population.
However, studying in Canada doesn’t only offer a pathway to a bright future; it can also provide a route to permanent Canadian residency if that is something you decide to pursue.
Requirements to Study in Canada
International students looking to study in Canada need three things before arriving:
- An acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI)
- A study permit
- A visitor visa
Designated Learning Institutions
Canada has a wide variety of educational institutions at every education level – elementary, high school, and post-secondary. Before applying for a study permit, you will need to apply to the school or program you’ve chosen and wait for your application to be processed.
Our consultants can help you pick the right location and school and help you navigate the application process. If you are accepted to your program of choice, congratulations, you’re ready to move on!
If you were not accepted or were conditionally accepted, you still have options. Canada has many degrees and diploma options; if you don’t get accepted into your first choice, we can help you find a suitable alternative.
Getting Your Study Permit
Once you have your acceptance letter, you’re ready to apply for your study permit, which will allow you to study in Canada.
Most international students are required to apply for their study permit through Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). However, residents of certain countries may be able to fast-track their applications through the Student Direct Stream.
To obtain a study permit, you must provide proof of:
- Your enrolment in a DLI
- Sufficient funds to cover your tuition, living expenses, and return transportation costs
- A clean criminal record check
- Good health with a recent medical exam (if requested)
If your study permit application is accepted, you will also be issued a visitor visa or electronic travel authorization (eTa) valid for the duration of your studies. This allows you to enter Canada.
